Racism in football

With the 2018 World Cup less than five years away, backward behaviour continues to spoil society and sport in Russia. The controversy surrounding the Yaya Toure/CSKA Moscow case has provoked yet another wave of negative headlines surrounding the 2018 World Cup, but it is just one of many in a series of high-profile incidents of racial abuse which have blighted Russian football in recent times.

Brazilian legend Roberto Carlos and former Blackburn defender Christopher Samba have both witnessed Russian football’s racism issue first hand- on only his third game for the club, Samba had a banana threw at him by a Lokomotiv Moscow supporter, similarly, Anzhi Makhachkala captain Carlos was twice the victim of banana attacks at Saint Petersburg and Samara.
