NEAR POST – MAKING PLANS FOR NIGEL IN THE STEEL CITY

Nigel Clough was appointed as manager of Sheffield United yesterday, replacing David Weir in the hotseat at Bramall Lane.

United’s co-chairman, Kevin McCabe, said:

“Nigel has a tremendous pedigree in the game. He brings undoubted experience and can provide stability, energy and confidence to the playing side, drawing on his 11 years at Burton Albion followed by over four and a half years with Derby County in the Championship.”

Co-chairman Prince Abdullah bin Mosaad bin Abdulaziz Al Saud added:

“Nigel was the clear, first choice of the board. He brings an approach to the game that is well suited to what we are trying to achieve at Sheffield United. Nigel has enjoyed managerial success in the game. He knows how to inspire first-team players to give their all and has a proven track record of making an academy a key ingredient to the club’s success. We count ourselves lucky to have Nigel aboard.”

“I am very proud and honoured to be given the opportunity to manage here,” Clough said. “I was disappointed with how it ended at Derby but now we have to put that behind us. I will try and build a team and squad capable of getting promotion. We are not miracle workers, it takes time to mould and recruit a team.

“I am looking forward to seeing the squad at close quarters; I think things are slowly turning round. To be realistic, let’s get out of the bottom four and then get a squad together that can challenge.”

It looks likely that Clough will be joined at United by at least some of his previous backroom team from Derby.

County have already announced that Gary Crosby, Johnny Metgod, Martin Taylor and Simon Clough, who had all been placed on gardening leave after Nigel Clough left, have all now left employment with the Rams.

Crosby, Garner and Simon Clough, who will be acting as a club scout, have already been named by the Blades as featuring in the backroom set-up.

And, in the words of Andy Partridge of XTC, Nigel just needs this helping hand…

If young Nigel says he’s happy, he must be happy, he must be happy in his work.
